Stephen Covey taught a powerful lesson about trust. He described it as an Emotional Bank Account. Every interaction you have with another person is either a deposit or a withdrawal. That idea applies directly to your real estate business.
Every conversation, follow-up, email, text, social post, handwritten note, and client meeting either strengthens trust or weakens it. Sometimes the deposit is large. Sometimes it is very small. But over time, those deposits add up.
Active listening is a deposit. When a client shares a concern, you do not interrupt, dismiss it, or rush to the next point. You listen carefully. You acknowledge what they are feeling. You respond thoughtfully.
Keeping your word is a deposit. If you say you will send a list of homes, follow up with a market update, recommend a service provider, or check on a question, do it. And do it on time.
Showing appreciation is a deposit. A simple thank you can mean more than you think. A handwritten note, a quick message after a referral, or a small gesture of gratitude reminds people that you value the relationship, not just the transaction.
Honesty and transparency are deposits too. Sometimes you have to deliver tough news. A price adjustment may be needed. An inspection issue may create concern. A buyer may need to slow down and reconsider. Being upfront may not always be easy, but it builds long-term credibility.
Withdrawals work the other way. Not following up is a withdrawal. Delayed responses, forgotten promises, and missed details make clients question your reliability.
Overpromising and underdelivering is a withdrawal. It creates expectations you may not be able to meet. Being too transactional is another withdrawal. People notice when they are treated like a sale instead of a valued relationship.
The goal is to keep your Emotional Bank Account in the positive. When you have made enough deposits, trust becomes stronger. Clients are more patient when challenges arise. They are more likely to listen to your advice. They are more willing to refer you because they believe you will take care of the people they send your way.
This does not only apply to active clients. It also applies to your entire sphere of influence.
Educational and informational content gives you a way to make regular deposits with many people at once. An every-other-week newsletter, helpful homeowner tips, market updates, maintenance reminders, and consumer-focused social posts all say, "I am still here. I am still paying attention. I am still a resource you can trust."
That is how relationships stay warm between transactions.
