Don't Quit Before the Water Starts Flowing
Monday, September 28, 2026

Real estate agents are always looking for new ways to generate business. They try a new social media plan, send a few emails, make a few posts, or start a follow-up routine. Then, when the results do not show up quickly, they quit.

The problem may not be the strategy.  It may be that they stopped too soon.

Zig Ziglar told a story about an old-fashioned water pump. You would grab the handle and start pumping hard. At first, nothing happened. You kept pumping, and still nothing. Most people gave up right there.

But if you kept going, the water finally started to flow. And once it did, it came easier and faster with every stroke.  The key was to not stop before the water was flowing.  Your email and social media marketing work the same way.

At first, it may feel like nothing is happening. You post helpful information. You send a newsletter. You share a homeowner tip. You remind people that you are available to help. But the phone may not ring immediately.

That does not mean it is not working.  It means you are priming the pump.

Visibility and trust take time. Your sphere of influence needs to see you often enough to remember you. They need to hear from you consistently enough to believe you are active, informed, and available. They need to associate your name with helpful real estate guidance before they need real estate help.

At any given time, less than 10% of your followers or contacts may be thinking about buying or selling in the next 12 months. The other 90% are not in the market yet but someday, many of them will be.

When that time comes, the agent they are most likely to remember is not always the one who posted one listing six months ago. It is the one who kept showing up with useful, trustworthy information.

That is why your content should not be only about listings, open houses, and sales activity. A better balance is to make about 80% of your communication educational and informational. Share homeowner tips, maintenance reminders, market insights, financing updates, insurance ideas, tax reminders, and community information.

Then, use the remaining 20% for listings, success stories, testimonials, and direct calls to action.

This approach keeps you relevant to everyone in your sphere, not just the small percentage who are ready to move right now. It builds your brand quietly over time. It creates familiarity. It strengthens trust. It helps people remember who to call when a real estate question comes up.

So keep pumping the handle.  Don't quit just before the water starts flowing.
